It’s interesting to find out what pupils already know about units of measurement. Many seem to have an intuitive feel for them through everyday experience but don’t necessarily understand the difference between metric and imperial units. As a useful AfL tool for finding out what they do know and to give them an engaging activity that promotes thinking skills you might like to offer your pupils this units of measurement card sort.

Getting them to choose how they group the cards is very enlightening in assessing what they know. You can then hopefully steer them with guided questions if necessary to distinguish between units for weight, length, area, volume and capacity and also between metric and imperial units.
