Still can’t add and subtract fractions with different denominators? Try this…

There have been catchier titles in the world but the one for this blog post does what is says on the tin. If you find that no matter what you try some of your pupils just can’t find common denominators to add and subtract fractions then you might want to pull out the following method. WARNING: it’s a procedural method which hides all the conceptual understanding so save this for when it’s appropriate.

I found out that this method also works for those tricky A* algebraic fractions questions! If you just substitute the algebraic terms in rather than numbers this works fine and opens up those questions to pupils who would not normally try them…
